Office Space Redux

As King of the Hill goes into its umpteenth season on the Fox Network schedule, I have to wonder how this pedestrian show overshadows Mike Judge’s true contribution to pop culture: the cinematic wonder that is 1999’s Office Space. This low-budget offering barely made back its production costs during its run at the cineplex, thanks to some piss-poor promotion from 20th Century FOx and the general indifference of critics who largely didn’t care one way or another about the film.

Shortly after its video release and feature on pay movie channels, Office Space began to take on a rabid cult following. Today, you hear phrases lifted from that movie at workplaces all across this country–phrases like “sounds like somebody’s got a case of ‘The Mondays'” and “Did you get that memo about the TPS Reports?” (“TPS” has become an office bacronym for things like “Totally Pointless Stuff” and “To Paper Shredder”.) The Swingline Stapler company even put a bright red stapler into production because of the demand for one “Like Milton used”. (The red Swingline used in the movie was custom-painted to match the stapler used in the original “Milton” Shorts.)

I guess the genius of this film is just how relatable it is. Anyone who works in a salaried, data-driven, cube-farm environment understands the hell of reporting to multiple bosses, efficiency audits, being tagged to work weekend hours and dealing with other employees who are too consumed with their own misery to care about yours. Face it; most of us are–at least in some way–dissatisfied and unfulfilled by their job. And who hasn’t fantasized about beating a contrary piece of office equipment into the ground with a Geto Boys soundtrack cheering you on? (“Die, Motherfucker. Die, Motherfucker–Still, fool…)

Given the universal nature of the film’s storyline, it’s fair to wonder if it would still be relevent in another context. To find out, watch this video, which masterfully dubs Office Space dialogue over the 70s animated Super Friends series. Enjoy!

  1. That was the only movie to every really understand me. We still have coffee now and again…but it’s been awkward since the baby.

  2. i helped build some office buildings for Eli Lilly. I was up on a lift looking down on one of the floors that had 4 hundred cubicles, and it occured to me that populated with little worker drones it would look just like a giant game of whack a mole from that vantage point.

  3. That’s an interesting perspective! Cubicles are the ultimate corporate dehumanization tactic.

  5. I love that movie. Even if I never plan to work at a place like that, I still love it.

  7. @ Cody: I don’t think anyone plans to work at a place like that.

@ Superhero: B&B were pretty big, even though I didn’t like them. (Made fun of too many of my fav. bands). However, they were pretty timely. I don’t think the next generation will relate to it so easily. However, as long as people continue to work at jobs they despise, Office Space will have a following.

  8. hahaha…you know… as much as I hate the “cheezburger” site (i know you’ll never forgive me for skewering it), I fuckin laughed my ass off at the cat above. Seriously…awesome. Looks just like Milton too! Good stuff.

  9. hahah

Chris, I might forgive you for skewering it … what I can’t forgive you for is … well, claiming falsely to have skewered it when all you were really doing was complaining that Cheez gets more traffic than you do.

  15. I can shlep a shoebox.

Yeah, those capsuruhoterus (capsule hotels) are pretty freaky. In some cities they cost as much as a regular hotel room in an American Hampton Inn or Ramada. Everything in Japan is ridiculously expensive.) In most cases, they only allow men to stay in them. My cousin got stuck in Osaka and had to wait a day for a train. He tried to stay in one, but was far too tall.

  19. Today, I made a deposit at my local bank. I asked the teller if I could borrow his stapler. He said I could since it wasn’t his “red stapler”. I asked if it was the Swingline Stapler and he laughed. This movie is far more popular than anyone realizes.
